UPDATE: One of my friends did this prank and brought ketchup doughnuts to work.  People ate the doughnuts and didn't complain.  This is clearly perplexing.

In Defense of Life, Liberty, and Emo Haircuts

Riot police have taken to the streets of several cities in Mexico to ... defend emo kids?

A series of attacks on dyed-hair, eye-makeup-wearing emo kids began in early March when several hundred people went on an emo-beating rampage in Querétaro, a town of 1.5 million about 160 miles north of Mexico City.

The next week, shaggy-haired emo teenagers were harassed again by punks and rockabillys in the capital, prompting police protection and a segment on the TV news. Most recently, a Mexican newspaper reported that metal heads and gangsters have warned Tijuana's emo kids to stay away from the town's fair next month.

But the so-called emos are organizing, too. Last week, they demonstrated against the violence..., and Wednesday some met with police in Mexico City.

A Song You're Too Stupid To Know About (Pt 1)

Let me introduce a new series, in which I’ll be sharing MP3’s of little gems of songs that have largely been forgotten by humankind.

We’ll begin with the song that has inspired the name of the series (you’ll be able to filter the site to find posts like this by clicking on the “You’re Stupid” category).  It’s a nerdy little piece of elitist indie pop, but is so endearingly ramshackle that you’ll love it anyway. 

The premise here is that Tullycraft is not impressed with your boyfriend’s mainstream music tastes, and wants to woo you with the kind of twee music that K Records, Sarah, and 53rd and 3rd released back in the day.   Inspirational verse: “Sure he buys you records if you like them by U2/ But if you want the Pastels baby here’s what you should do/ Get on your bike and take a hike and meet me at our spot/ Just you and me and the Halo Benders, hey that’s pretty hot!”

Finally Something Useful Done With Peeps

Now that Easter season is over, I can safely say what I've been thinking for months: I hate Peeps.  That might not sound controversial to you, but trust me that you don't want to say that statement to a Peeps enthusiast.  They will defend Peeps to the death.  I will never understand why.

But thankfully the Washington Post found a useful purpose for the disgusting marshmallow chicks: pop culture dioramas!  Check out the winners here.  My favorite is a Peep interpretation of the Filipino prisoners doing the Thriller dance, as made popular in this video.  Other good ones include Sesame Peep, Abbey Road and the Peeposterous Clues, The Peeps Next Door, Peeps Idol, No Country for Old Peeps, and Project Peepway.

Knut News

My favorite cuddly polar bear cub is a "publicity-addicted psycho" according to a zookeeper in Berlin. Apparently, he "identifies himself as a human and not as a polar bear."  Right.

I, for one, love the over-the-top Knut commentary.  Can anyone else think of anything even remotely similar?  I've never seen so many ridiculous new stories about an animal before.  I love it.

New Raconteurs

They're back!   The Raconteurs are that out-of-nowhere band -- featuring Jack "White Stripes" White and Brandan "You Should Hear His Solo Stuff Too" Bensen -- that had a hit with "Steady As She Goes" a couple years ago.   Here are a couple good ones from the release from this past Tuesday, courtesy of imeem.

Our friend Nicole Sauce drew my attention to this post at Tennessee Cottonmouth, about the plight of Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton, a moonshiner that's been busted by ATF.   

Yes, it's an interesting example of  Big Brother law enforcement putting people away for victimless crimes.... But I post it here because, wow, that is SOME BEARD.   The only thing cooler than this beard is the nickname Popcorn.
