I hit up the Rock and Roll Hotel on Saturday night for a three-band CD release party (which is thrice the fun of just one CD release party).
First up was Five Four. They're probably lovely people, but if you ever see this band, run in the opposite direction. They were awful. I've never seen five people look so disinterested on stage before. They were beyond boring and it rubbed off the crowd. Perk up -- it's your CD release party! They also scored negative points for being so obsessed with robots. Their new CD is "robot themed" or some such, which doesn't make any sense because there is nothing about their music that makes you think of robots. They also had two "robots" on stage, aka cardboard boxes covered in tin foal. I had to "make a robot" for a sixth grade project, and my robot looked 100 times better than theirs. If a sixth grader with no artistic skills can make a better robot, you are in trouble.
Next up were D.C.'s own The Frustrations. They are a great live band and provide a delightful mix of genres, so next time you are in the mood for some ska/alternative/soul/rock/reggae goodness, check them out. They rocked through the songs on their new CD (check out "Everyone Loves a Winner") and played some off their last CD (check out "Scenic Route"), though my favorite song of the night was so new that it wasn't even on their new CD. I guess I'll have to wait for that one.
New York's Hello Tokyo rounded out the show. This was the third time I've seen them live and it was by far their best performance. They offer a great mix of indie rock and power pop. Their energy on stage is bountiful, their new songs are great (I'll review their new CD sometime soon), and the lead singer (Kat) is very charismatic frontwoman. Check out the first single off the new album, "Radio." It's super catchy.
All in all, a very good show.
