I've never seen four of the movies on the list (Polar Express, Coraline, Children of Men, and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow) but based on what I've heard of them, I'm inclined to cut them.  In their stead I'd push for: The Blair Witch Project, Fight Club, something from Pixar, and Lord of the Rings.  I'm also sympathetic to including a comic/superhero movie of sorts (the first X-Men movie? Spiderman?) for reviving that genre.

It's a Hootenanny!

As I've previously mentioned here on Yeah Right, Rivers Cuomo didn't do a standard tour for his recent solo efforts -- Alone I and Alone II -- he did a hootenanny tour (Weezer did similar shows following the release of the red album).  Rivers did a bunch of small gigs, with 150-200 fans, invited attendees to bring along some instruments, and they all jammed out together.  As a huge =w= fan, I'd been curious as to what the hootenanny sounded like.  Luckily, Rivers recorded one such show at a Long Beach, CA record shop and released the show as a DVD, Not Alone -- Rivers Cuomo & Friends Live at Fingerprints. The results are pretty impressive.  Check out this clip of "El Scorcho" off Pinkerton.

This Actually Isn't All About You.

I'll admit that I have a weakness for the reality show genre, and if a new one pops up, I'm almost guaranteed to give it a try.  While right now I'm only actively watching two (American Idol and Hell's Kitchen), I'm not ashamed to admit that I've spent some less-than-quality time with Survivor, Rock Star, The Amazing Race (tried out for that one), Top Chef, Big Brother, Boot Camp, Paradise Hotel and even Temptation Island.  OK, so maybe I'm a little ashamed.  Anyway, one thing I've decided is certain -- the people who get on these shows tend to be a little self-centered.

This has reached an annoying new level of late in the contest type shows where vulnerable contestants face possible elimination by some sort of judge (the voting audience, the star, etc.).  Over at Big Hollywood, I was glad to see one of the manifestations of this contestant ego-centrism is annoying Kurt Schlichter, too.  It's the idea that, somehow, a poor performance is OK if the contestant "had fun."  The American Idols are particularly guilty of this one.  Frankly, I couldn't care less if you enjoyed yourself if my ears are bleeding.
