At the beginning of the month I hit up DC9 to finally see The Dance Party – a DC band that I’ve liked for several years. They’ve recently changed their name to the much less enjoyable Brett. I love their old name. But I’m sympathetic to changing it. Who knows, maybe they had to for legal reasons. But even barring that, it can get confusing. “I’m going to The Dance Party” sounds like you are going to a dance party, not a band. So maybe they wanted more clarity and thus a name change. But why Brett? It sounds like one person. Not a band. And certainly not a band that makes dance music. It’s a bizarre choice. Very bizarre.
I arrived too late to catch People in Cars, but I did see the other opener Misun. They were synth heavy with female vocals. Their energy was lower than The Dance Party (I refuse to call them Brett) but still very catchy and enjoyable. The lead singer would join TDP for a song in their set, which was one of the highlights of the evening.
The lead singer of TDP performs with sunglasses and danced like Michael Jackson (for the first half of the show at least, after that it got much more frantic). This amused me greatly. As did the dance-y rock pop goodness that the band put forth. They might not be The Dance Party anymore, but it was certainly one hell of a dance party.

No opinion about the band one way or another but I am obviously put off by your disappointment with their new name ;-)
